Now that her award-winning Broadway show Vania and Sonia and Masha and Spike has finished its run, Sigourney Weaver is once again looking for big-screen projects. It seems she’s found one with Ridley Scott’s Exodus.
Weaver has reportedly signed on to play Tuya, the mother of Pharaoh Ramses, a role which recently went to Joel Edgerton. Weaver is also attached to The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes, sequel to the recent box office bomb The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, but it looks like Exodus beats Instruments to the punch, as production is planned to start in September. Exodus won’t be traveling to the (increasingly unstable) Holy Lands to shoot, however; England and Spain will substitute for Egypt and Palestine. It is, perhaps, fitting of the cast that feels, shall we say, about as racially appropriate as Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton did playing the leads in Prince of Persia.
That said, with Christian Bale on board as Moses, it does look like a very good cast. In addition to Weaver’s signing, The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Aaron Paul (Jesse in Breaking Bad) and John Turturro (O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Transformers) are both in negotiations for roles in Exodus. All of that, plus Scott and Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List, Moneyball) script, do have us excited for this second of next year’s biblical tentpoles.
Exodus is due out December 12 of 2014.
