European Genre Film Foundation Launches at Cannes

This year at the Cannes Film Festival, the European Genre Film Foundation is using the festival as it’s launching point.

EGFF is a foundation created with the goal of raising awareness of classic genre films around the world, working with all sorts of archives and collections, to make films more widely available for audiences and to preserve them for generations to come. The Foundation is inspired by the American Genre Film Archive.

The board of directors at EGFF includes renowned names like Mariah Larsson from Institution for Film and Literature in Sweden, the head of Cannes Classics Gérald Duchaussoy in France, and Mikko Aromaa from Nordic Genre Invasion in Finland.

One of the first projects the foundation will spend time on is a historic European female filmmakers study. The project will consist of raising money for a scanner completely dedicated to restoring and digitizing films for archives, as well as organizing screenings and such to celebrates films by these women.

The funding for this foundation is coming from Cultpix, a new streaming platform launched in 2021. It is a streaming platform with a focus on classic and cult genre films and adds upwards of 30 new titles monthly for viewers to enjoy.
