On November 5, Marvel Studios and Disney executives received news regarding Eternals’ low audience score of a ‘B’ on CinemaScore, the lowest grade ever received by a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With a low audience grade combined with the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score in the history of MCU, many box-office experts are questioning whether Eternals could even cross $70 million in its domestic opening, which is much less than the $75 million Marvel and Disney had anticipated.
The film did surpass the projected gross with an estimated $71 million in North America alone. Industry sources claim that no company or studio can produce films with impeccable results, not even the well-reputed Marvel Universe.
Fans aren’t acquainted with the characters in Eternals, so the story’s execution was crucial, and while there was criticism from many critics, fans still came out to see the film.
“Marketing hype plus the excitement of die-hard fans were the building blocks of the strong debut that Eternals enjoyed this weekend. However, it’s the one-two punch of great word-of-mouth and strong critical reviews that will be key to the film’s long-term playability in theaters and thus determine its ultimate fate in cinemas around the globe,” claims Comscore’s Paul Dergarabedian. “Of course, rules don’t generally apply to Marvel.” Dergarabedian adds.
Eternals will await its fate in the box-office over the next following weeks among the various competitive films currently in theaters.
