Ernie Hudson Coming Aboard ‘Ghostbusters’ Reboot

Actor Ernie Hudson (Miss Congeniality) appears set to appear in Sony’s upcoming girl-power Ghostbusters reboot starring Melissa McCarthy (Tammy), Kristen Wiig (Welcome to Me), and Saturday Night Live players Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Hudson, of course, appeared in both the original 1984 Ghostbusters and the 1989 sequel playing Winston Zeddemore. The original comedy was directed by Iva Reitman and starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and the late Harold Ramis.

The casting news sparks a further change of heart for Hudson, who original told commented that an all-female Ghostbusters “would be a bad idea.” Hudson later was quoted in The Telegraph stating, “I heard [the new Ghostbusters] was going to be a total reboot, and that it would have nothing to do with the other two movies … If it has nothing to do with the other two movies, and it’s all female, then why are you calling it Ghostbusters?”

The actor appeared to bend when McCarthy, Wiig, McKinnon and Jones were announced, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “Four fiercely funny, foxy, females busting ghosts … phenomenal!” Hudson joins Murray, who back in August was confirmed to participate in the rebooted Ghostbusters. It’s unsure as of now if Hudson (or Murray) are continuing their characters are starting from scratch or if Aykroyd is confirmed to participate either (the comic actor is still listed as rumored on the films’ IMDb page).

Paul Feig (BridesmaidsSpy) directs and co-scripts the film alongside Katie Dippold (The Heat). Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Michael Kenneth Williams (Captive), Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live), Nate Corddry (St. Vincent) and Matt Walsh (Veep) co-star. Ghostbusters is set to hit theaters on July 15, 2016.
