Emma Watson is taking over for Emma Stone in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women remake, which is set to be in production next month. Stone can no longer join the production because she will be involved in the promotion of Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite, which is considered an early Oscar forerunner.
Watson, who was recently seen in Disney’s highly successful Beauty and The Beast and STXfilms’ The Circle, will be joining Little Women with Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, and Florence Pugh. The Little Women novel, written by Louisa May Alcott in 1868, has been adapted for film and TV numerous times, with the most recent adaption being a 1994 film with Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst, Claire Danes, and Susan Sarandon.
This will be the second film Gerwig directs. Her directorial debut was Lady Bird, which garnered five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Director, Actress, and Original Screenplay. There’s no release date set for Little Women yet, but it is expected to be in the cinema next year.
