Emma Stone (The Amazing Spider-Man, The Help) will be starring in The Catch with Chris Pine (The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Just My Luck). Stone has recently taken a break from the rom-com genre despite starring in classic romantic comedies such as Easy A, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The House Bunny, Friends with Benefits, Magic in the Moonlight and La La Land.
She stepped away from the genre to work alongside filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, The Favorite) as she acted in the films Kinds of Kindness, Bugonia and Poor Things. Her final appearance in a rom-com was in 2016 in the film La La Land that co-starred Ryan Gosling (The Notebook, Project Hail Mary). Her appeal to The Catch came from certain aspects of the screenplay.
The film will be directed by Stone’s husband Dave McCary (When You Finish Saving The World, A Real Pain). The original script was produced by Michael Levin (The Paper, Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.) and Patrick Kang (How I Met Your Mother, Young Rock). The recently updated script was drafted by Travis Helwig (Adam Ruins Everything, Edith!) and Jen Statsky (Hacks, The Good Place). The producers of the film are McCary’s production company Fruit Tree, Universal Pictures and Dan Levine (Voyage of the Unicorn, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day) and Shawn Levy (Night At The Museum, Deadpool & Wolverine) of 21 Laps production company. The romantic comedy will premiere May 21, 2027 in theaters.
