English actress Emily Mortimer appears set to join the cast of Disney’s upcoming supercalifragilisticexpialidocious sequel Mary Poppins Returns. Rob Marshall (Chicago) will direct the film which has already enlisted the massive talents of Emily Blunt (Sicario), Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw (Spectre) and Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins).
Set twenty five years following the events of the first film – in which Julie Andrews won an Oscar for her immortal take on the magical nanny inspired by the books of P.L. Travers. Blunt, currently on screen in The Girl on the Train, takes over as Mary with Hamilton creator Miranda set to portray a street limelighter named Jack. Mortimer and Whishaw are slated to portray Jane and Michael Banks, the children previously under Mary’s care, now adults. Streep will play a cousin of Mary’s. Like the original 1964 film, Mary Poppins Returns will be a musical, featuring news songs penned by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
Mortimer in recent years has appeared in Shutter Island and Hugo for director Martin Scorsese, the indie comedy Our Idiot Brother alongside Paul Rudd and Elizabeth Banks as well a pair of recent HBO television series: The Newsroom and Doll & Em.
Mary Poppins Returns hits theaters on December 25, 2018.
