Emily Blunt’s MCU Roles That Never Were

Emily Blunt went on the Happy Sad Confused podcast recently following her latest starring role in Oppenheimer. Several things were spoken about, but one of the conversations included how Blunt almost joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe back around 2010.

She could have joined as Black Widow, who is now played by Scarlett Johansson. On the subject, Blunt said, “Come on, the best girl got it,” and even went on to say she was amazing. According to Deadline, there have been rumors of Blunt being offered more roles within the cinematic universe, including Captain Marvel, Peggy Carter, and Sue Storm.

Blunt said, “Rumors. Talk. Queries. That kind of thing.” She also claimed that she had never met with any of the producers or directors of the films. Throughout the past decade, Blunt has starred in various successful films, including The Five-Year Engagement, Looper, Into the Woods, Sicario, The Huntsman: Winter’s War, The Girl on the Train, A Quiet Place – both part I and II, Mary Poppins Returns, Jungle Cruise, and Oppenheimer

In terms of why Blunt didn’t take the Marvel role of Black Widow – it was due to scheduling conflicts. She said, “It was a bit of a heartbreaker for me because I take such pride in the decisions that I make, and they mean so much to me, the films I do, so that was tough. They [Fox] kind of have a bit of hold over you. There were other movies that I would want to do.”

The scheduling conflict came from Gulliver’s Travels, which, according to Deadline, was a film she did not want to do.

Blunt’s newest film role is in Oppenheimer, which is currently showing in theaters.
