‘Emancipation’ May Have Faced Trouble On The Road To Its Release

Will Smith’s film, Emancipation, may have hit a bit of a snag in the road to its release. It came in an unexpected form, however, of a legislation that, if passed, could have affected the film.

Emancipation, from Equalizer director Antoine Fuqua, followed an enslaved man, played by Smith, as he risks his own life escaping a plantation to make a journey north to find freedom.

The legislation in question that would’ve affected the film was one to get app developers to work around the App Store and find other ways to bring their programs to iPhone users.

Similarly, Apple served as the production company for Emancipation, akin to their work on Killers Of The Flower Moon and Napoleon. NY Post made note that the legislation was circulating within Louisiana, the same state that Emancipation was filmed in.

When Apple caught wind of this, they allegedly threatened to cancel Emancipation completely, which was still in production at the time. Wall Street Journal even noted that Apple had allegedly taken the idea of the legislation as a threat to one of their income sources.

However, while this was stated by an Apple employee, a spokesperson for Apple since came out to say that there was no threat made to begin with.
