Director Dexter Fletcher has long been trying to find the right footing to make his Elton John biopic, Rocketman, which was originally scheduled to start production all the way back in 2014. The mentioning of names like Tom Hardy and Justin Timberlake to star as the famed singer-songwriter, who is also serving as producer of the film, were met with raised eyebrows and scratched heads. Hardy was not as accomplished a singer as the role demanded once production neared.
Now, it appears that Fletcher and John may have found the right man to send into orbit in John’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle co-star, Taron Egerton.
It seems signs may have pointed to Egerton for the role recently. Not only is Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn a producer on this and Fletcher’s last effort was Egerton’s star vehicle Eddie the Eagle, but Illumination Entertainment’s 2016 animated musical Sing also featured Egerton as adolescent gorilla named Johnny, who performs Elton John’s own hit “I’m Still Standing” in the film’s finale.
With a script from Lee Hall (Billy Elliot), Rocketman will depict John’s early life and career that lead him to becoming a pop music legend. No production schedule or release date have yet to be revealed.
