Grady Hendrix’s 2016 coming-of-age horror novel, My Best Friend’s Exorcism, is getting a film adaptation from Killing Eve and Penny Dreadful director Damon Thomas. The film is set to star Eighth Grade’s Elsie Fisher, War for the Planet of the Apes actress Amiah Miller, Cathy Ang and Rachel Ogechi Kanu.
The film began production this week for Endeavor Content and, even though deals are still being finalized, it is expected to land at Amazon Studios. Hedrix’s novel follows Abby and Gretchen, two sophomore best friends in high school. When a night of skinny-dipping goes wrong, Gretchen begins to act strangely, causing Abby to believe that her friend may be possessed by a demonic force. Abby will be played by Fisher and Gretchen will be played by Miller. Ang and Kanu will play the friends of the main characters.
Fisher is known primarily for the aforementioned Eighth Grade which shot her to stardom. She also starred in the Hulu series Castle Rock, and has recently wrapped on two films: Shoot the Moon, with Henry Winkler and Margot Martingale, and Harlow for Legendary Entertainment.
The film will mark Kanu’s first feature. She grew up in Nigeria and moved to the US where she studied at New York’s Pace University.
My Best Friend’s Exorcism doesn’t currently have a release date, but it’s safe to expect a spooky coming-of-age adventure with this upcoming film.
