Universal Pictures has released the final trailer for Wicked: For Good. The film, which is an adaptation of the popular Broadway musical, will serve as the direct follow-up to last year’s Wicked. Last year’s film covered the first act of the musical, with this second film finishing out the story. Instead of simply calling the film “Part 2,” they opted for the subtitle “For Good,” referencing the mot popular song from Act 2.
In the trailer, we see Elphaba and Glinda be driven even further apart, with Elphaba being branded as “The Wicked Witch of the West” and Glinda being given the public persona of “Glinda the Good.” We see Elphaba trying her best to expose the lies of The Wizard of Oz, played by Jeff Goldblum, but ultimately losing favor with the public. Later on, we see multiple groups attempting to hunt her down. First, Prince Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) and his soldiers, and later Dorothy Gale.
Based on the trailer, Wicked: For Good will have a lot of crossover with the classic The Wizard of Oz. Dorothy, The Tin Man, The Scarecrow and The Lion are all featured multiple times in the trailer. Elphaba notes, “There’s a house. And it’s flying through the sky.” Additionally, Elphaba and Glinda have a fight in front of the wreckage of Dorothy’s house. Just as the book Broadway musical did, it seems this film will recontextualize many aspects of The Wizard of Oz.
Returning for the film are Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, Elphaba and Glinda respectively. Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Marissa Bode and Jonathan Bailey all return as well. The first film was nominated for a variety of awards, including 10 Oscars, so be sure to keep an eye on this film come awards season. Wicked: For Good hits theaters this fall on November 21.
