Despite multiple new premieres, including a new animated Pixar release and a highly anticipated sequel 28 years later, the How to Train Your Dragon Live action remake continued to rule the box office at number 1.
How to Train Your Dragon brought in $37 million for its second domestic weekend, knocking 28 years later to second which brought in $30 million for its opening week. While still a strong opening for a horror film, 28 years later is planned to be the start of a new trilogy and has fallen behind hopeful projections for its domestic opening, leaving a slight possibility of the studios plans changing if it cannot keep up traction. Original projections were between $35 million to $45 million for the zombie flick. The prevailing theory for the weak start is an over saturation of horror films earlier in the year flooding the theatrical market.
Landing in third is Elio, Pixar’s latest animated family film which after release date shuffling and delays opened to a record low of $21 million for the studio. Original projections had placed Elio at $30 million, but last week anticipating the historic low Disney shifted projections to $20 million to $25 million. Back in 2023 Elemental opened with $29.6 million, the previous low which over the course of the summer and fall earned $500 million as a sleeper hit. Pixar is confident in recreating that same situation as Elio has much higher audience and critic review scores then Elemental did.
Fourth place went to Lilo & Stitch with $9.7 million for its fifth week. The film is once again beating Mission Impossible — The Final Reckoning which saw $6.55 million for its fifth week also.
From A24, indie darling Materialists came in sixth with $5.8 million beating big studio production From the World of John Wick: Ballerina which saw $4.5 million for its third week further cementing the film’s below average box office performance for the franchise. Ballerina still has positive reviews and has a chance to bounce back with a slow crawl over the summer thanks to its early start and the possible streaming boost.
Eighth place went to Karate Kid: Legends which pulled in a measly $2.4 million for what was supposed to be a franchise revival and it’s fourth week for grand total of $49.37 million domestic gross.
In ninth place the horror film of the season so far Final Destination Bloodlines saw one more boost of $1.88 Million for it’s sixth week out in theaters for a whopping $134.8 million domestic.
In 10th Place was newcomer Kuberaa, pulling in $1.75 million. For the first time since its release, Sinners was not in the top ten, at 10 weeks and $880K it finished at thirteenth. Also falling off the list from last week was the Life of Chuck, which saw a slight decrease after a second week boost with $1 million and the Phoenician Scheme at $1.4 million which finished ahead of Sinners.
