An amendment of the eligibility requirements for the Golden Globes has just been announced. Starting with the 2023 Golden Globes, an approach of in-person, DVD, or streaming for eligible films will be enacted.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has done this in understanding that in this new Covid world, if a surge should occur, they have decided to not discriminate against projects that choose to debut on a remote platform rather than a traditional in person theater premiere. But at this moment, they have returned to their original rules, with this new adjustment in place should something happen.
Similar to the Globes, the Oscars have also recently decided to make some changes to their guidelines about streaming vs traditional premieres. In an effort to support the movie theater industry which has suffered during the pandemic, films that go straight to streaming services and bypass screening in theaters first will no longer be eligible for an Academy Award.
All of these new changes within the Golden Globes and Oscars will make the next ceremonies very interesting, as well as seeing if any other major award shows decide to follow in their footsteps to make an alteration to their rules.
