On Thursday, Focus Features released the first trailer for Edgar Wright’s (Baby Driver, Cornetto Trilogy, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) upcoming documentary The Sparks Brothers. The film revolves around brothers Ron and Russel Mael, who make up the influential pop/rock group Sparks.
The film includes footage of the band spanning their nearly five decade career. As well as exclusive interviews from the band and several celebrities who have been influenced by the band. Wright’s love for Sparks is very evident in the trailer, with the humor, editing and unique animations lending themselves nicely to Wright’s style.
The official synopsis is below:
How can one rock band be successful, underrated, hugely influential, and criminally overlooked all at the same time? Take a musical odyssey through five weird and wonderful decades with brothers Ron and Russell Mael, celebrating the inspiring legacy of Sparks: your favorite band’s favorite band.
Wright is not only directing, he is also producing alongside Laura Richardson, Nira Park, and George Henken. A few of the previously mentioned celebrity interviews include Beck, Mike Myers, Fred Armisen, ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic, Flea, Jason Schwartzman, Patton Oswalt, Neil Gaimen, Björk, and several more. In total, more than 80 people were interviewed for the film. In some animation segments, frequent Wright collaborators Simon Pegg and Nick Frost voice John Lennon and Ringo Starr respectively.
The common consensus is that if you are not currently a Sparks fan, you will be after watching this film.
The film premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival back in January, and was also screened at SXSW this past March.
The Sparks Brothers is set to be released on June 18 in U.S. theaters.
