If there was any film in the 2010s that has gained more popularity over the past decade, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is definitely one of them. Released in August of 2010, the film was considered a box office disappointment making barely $50 million dollars on a $85 million budget. However, the film manage to stick around thanks to how unique it was as an action comedy from popular cult director Edgar Wright. The popularity for the film has grown so much that Wright made the announcement that Scott Pilgrim will be getting re-release in theaters later this year.
The announcement was made on Edgar Wright’s twitter account during a live tweeting discussion of the film with the Academy. The re-release will be through DolbyCinema. No exact date has been set for the re-release as movie theaters are still closed down due to Covid-19. Wright mentioned that the re-release was initially set for August since that is when the 10th anniversary will officially be, though there’s no official confirmation. However, Wright assured fans that “This will happen soon. Scott Pilgrim will be back on the big screen thanks to Universal and Dolby Cinema”.
This new re-release for the film could garner some major excitement for both longtime fans of the movie and those who have never seen it. It has grown immensely popular over the years with audiences quickly discovering the film after Baby Driver helped revive Edgar Wright’s film career. It also has grown in popularity thanks to streaming and its distinctive look compared to other comic book movie adaptations, really solidifying Wright’s stylistic vision as a director.
With theaters rumored to be opening up in the next few months, a re-release of one of the most popular cult films of the 2010s could get audiences excited. And who knows, maybe depending on how successful, we could even get that long awaited sequel that has been rumored for awhile.
