In a recent interview, director Edgar Pêra discussed his recent film Asphalt Guerrilla, which is set to have its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival. The film is described as a “hybrid film” of sorts, blending fact, fiction, and generative AI elements to tell a story about the filmmaking process itself. The film is also said to hold a mirror to contemporary society by using cinema as a tool to reflect reality. This is how Pêra describes the film in the interview:
“There are many films in this film. The very beginning was this book, which I read in the ’90s and basically shows a very amateurish group of guerrilla men or terrorists, depending on your point of view, but it gradually transforms into a film about my own guerrilla [film] scene, mainly because my friend and producer Rodrigo Areias made me do it.”
Pêra also explained why it may be difficult to decipher what is what in the film’s blend of factual and fictional elements. As Pêra explains:
“This fusion, or blur, of fiction and reality is something that I like, but it’s also something that I must fight against,” he explains. “So the film is also a mirror of what’s happening, where you sometimes don’t really know what’s real.”
Asphalt Guerrilla will world premiere in the Out of Competition program during its 79th edition on Monday, Aug. 10.
