Easter weekend has not helped the underwhelming 2019 box office sales. The holiday weekend, which usually lends a hand to struggling films, only garnered $110 million in the domestic box office. Easter weekend has not slumped this low since 1994, when the American population was 20% of what it is today.
This past weekend follows a trend of 2019 falling short of hopes and projections. It is also the 13th week that 2019 trailed its preceding year in gross box office results. The 2018 Easter weekend grossed $140 million, much more successful holiday results.
One of the notable victories this Easter was the faith-based horror film, The Curse of La Llorona. The $9 million horror production opened to an impressive $25 million debut weekend.
The Curse of La Llorona sees the return of the legendary myth of the ghost of La Llorona. Set in 1970s Los Angeles, the film sees a social worker and her family terrorized and eventually transported to a demonic realm. The family’s only hope for survival and salvation lies in the hands of a disillusioned priest that practices mysticism to keep evil spirits out of the earthly realm.
Avengers: Endgame is currently being treated as the shining beacon that will save the struggling market.
