Oscar Nominee Bruce Beresford signed on to direct Clear Lake, new Buddy Holly biopic. The news broke via The Hollywood Reporter, who had an exclusive interview with Beresford.
Beresford is a critically acclaimed director, with his 1989 film Driving Miss Daisy garnering tons of positive press.
Rick French will serve as executive producer, and Holly’s widow Maria Elena Holly, who helped develop the film, will additionally produce the film.
The film will chronicle Holly’s life but will primarily focus on his historic 1958 U.S. concert tour, which broke racial boundaries.
French told The Hollywood Reporter, “The undertone of the story is how black, Hispanic and white artists came together on the first truly integrated music tour to begin to break down color barriers, in much the same way Jackie Robinson did in professional baseball. That’s a particularly relevant story for me to tell because I co-own the minor league baseball team in Daytona Beach, Florida where Jackie Robinson first broke baseball’s color barrier.”
The process of casting for the film has just begun, so there has been no official cast announced yet.
The biopic is hoping to start filming in Fall 2020, subject to social distancing precautions.
