Joe Carnahan (Stretch, Smokin’ Aces) will take over as director of Motorcade for DreamWorks, according to Deadline. DreamWorks had put the proposed thriller, about an attack on the presidential motorcade, on hold for some time. At various points, Tom Cruise and Ryan Reynolds had each been cast as a Secret Service agent who fails to prevent a presidential kidnapping. It is unclear whether either of them is still attached to the project.
Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald will produce the film. Parkes wrote the script along with Billy Ray, though Carnahan will have a chance to make some revisions. If Cruise and Reynolds are too busy, Liam Neeson might be a good candidate for the leading role, since he worked with Carnahan on The A-Team (2010) and The Grey (2011). Action films featuring guns and cars have been Carnahan’s bread and butter throughout his career thus far, so Motorcade certainly seems to be in capable hands. As for attacks on the president, 2013 saw two films on that subject: White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen, which were released close together. Neither made much of an impression with critics or audiences, though the sequel to Olympus, London Has Fallen, is currently in development.
