Kristen Stewart has signed on to star in Camp X-Ray and Olivier Assayas’s Sils Maria. The two projects are a bit of a return to her roots for Stewart; prior to work in major blockbusters like Twilight and Snow White and the Huntsman, she starred in indie pictures like On the Road and The Runaways.
In Camp X-Ray, Stewart is set to play a young soldier who joins the military as a way of escaping the small town she grew up in. She expects to ship out to Afghanistan, but instead must face the hatred from the prisoners she is guarding in Guantanamo Bay. The story centers on the friendship her character builds with one of the inmates. It’s a very different sort of role than any Stewart has played before, and it will be interesting to see how she handles it. The film is being written and directed by Peter Sattler, who previously directed a short titled “Newton” in 2001.
In Sils Maria, named after the film’s Swiss location, Stewart will co-star with Chloë Moretz and Juliette Binoche. Stewart signed onto the project after Mia Wasikowska had to leave the role, and will play assistant to Binoche’s struggling, aging actress role. Moretz is taking on the part of a young up-and-comer who is reinterpreting a certain role that Binoche’s character once played.
For Moretz, Sils Maria will also be a break in the big blockbuster chain, as it will start shooting after the much anticipated Carrie re-make and Kick-Ass 2 both release.
Both Camp X-Ray and Sils Maria are set to begin shooting in the summer.
