A reimagined version of Judy Garland’s Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz (1939) will not appear in Jon M. Chu’s Wicked: For Good — at least not her face. Though the Wicked (2024) director has said the sequel will feature more of Dorothy than the Broadway musical did, he didn’t want to interfere with audiences’ perceptions of the beloved character.
The first film earned both Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo Academy Award nominations for their roles as Glinda and Elphaba, respectively. The upcoming sequel has already received early praise and awards buzz from preview screenings. It follows Glinda’s journey to provide comfort to the people of Oz, while a demonized Elphaba hides in the Ozian forest.
In an interview with People, Chu said, “[This] is still Elphaba and Glinda’s journey, and [Dorothy] is a pawn in the middle of all of it.” There will still be nods to the classic film, however, as Oscar-winning costume designer Paul Tazewell shared that the team drew inspiration from a jeweled butterfly choker worn by Billie Burke as Glinda in the original Wizard of Oz.
Jonathan Bailey (Fiyero), Michelle Yeoh (Madame Morrible), Jeff Goldblum (The Wizard), Ethan Slater (Boq), and Marissa Bode (Nessarose) are returning for the sequel. The screenplay is by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, based on Holzman’s original Broadway musical. The film score is by John Powell, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.
Wicked: For Good comes to theaters November 21. Watch the trailer here.
