Universal has made another film based on the very successful video game franchise, Doom. However, unlike the 2005 film adaptation starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, this film version of Doom is slated for a direct to video release. Universal 1440, a studio in charge of distributing non-theatrical related films, will be releasing the new video game movie under the title, Doom: Annihilation.
The film is directed by Tony Giglio and stars newcomers Amy Mason, Dominic Mafham, Luke Allan Gale, and Nina Bergman. The film is about mercenaries fighting off demons on Mars and has no real ties to the 2005 film but still borrows elements from the game. The first trailer has been released in a quick 30-second ad showcasing an over the top nature and violence.
Unfortunately, the film’s low budget look has yet to win over fans on a possibly great movie based on the hit first-person shooter. Many criticize the film as looking rather bland and generic with even the creators of the series at ID Software trying to distance themselves from the direct to video movie. Fortunately, though, Doom fans won’t have to settle with just this film as the next big game in the series, Doom: Eternal is set to come out at the end of 2019.
