While Fede Alvarez, the filmmaker behind 2016’s original horror movie Don’t Breathe, will still be producer and co-writer for its sequel, will no longer be the director. That responsibility has been passed to Rodo Sayagues, who co-wrote Don’t Breathe and the 2013 Evil Dead remake. That means that Sayagues will make his directorial debut with Don’t Breathe 2, whose release date has not yet been confirmed by Sony Pictures but will begin filming this April.
Stephan Lang will also be returning as Norman Nordstrom, otherwise known as “The Blind Man.” In the original film, Rocky (Jane Levy) and two other friends break into the house of a blind man, thinking that he is an easy target. However, when it turns out that The Blind Man is an unstoppable, deadly force with disturbing secrets, the burglars must fight their way out of the house in order to survive. Don’t Breathe was a box office success, grossing $157 million and received overall positive responses for using home-invasion and unusual circumstances tropes without depending on supernatural elements that have become cliché in the horror genre.
Plot details for Don’t Breath 2 still remain a mystery, but the sequel is said to be set several years after the first movie, centering around The Blind Man living a quiet, solitude life until past sins catch up to him. The sequel may bring back unresolved conflict from the first movie between Rocky and The Blind Man, or reveal more disturbing details about his past. In any case, as the film starts preparing for production, fans can anticipate more information about this horrific home invasion thriller.
