During an interview with GQ Magazine, Atlanta showrunner, and star Donald Glover expresses his hope and excitement to play the charismatic Lando Calrissian again. He is in talks with Lucasfilm to possibly reprise his role for an unknown future Star Wars project.
Glover expresses his awe for the character and his love for playing to Calrissian’s natural charisma. “Lando is charm incarnate,” Glover explains. “He’s kind of a maverick, which I don’t think there’s a lot of anymore.” During the interview, Glover discusses how the pandemic forced many people, including himself, to recognize the finite amount of time they have. Because of this, he has decided to stick with roles that are neither a waste of time nor just for a simple paycheck. Glover explains that he wants to spend time with people he enjoys. “Lando is definitely somebody I like to hang out with,” he explains.
While most fans have expressed hope that this project could be a possible sequel to Solo: A Star Wars Story, director Ron Howard, who worked on the first Solo, has expressed his doubt in the past about possibly returning to that storyline. “The only discussion that I’m aware of about a sequel for Solo is coming from the fans at this point,” Howard explains in an interview with NME, citing the possibility that it’s not a priority for Lucasfilm. Due to Solo’s failure at the box office, Lucasfilm seems to have dropped the idea of picking up where it left off. However, Howard does express hope that they will return to these characters someday as “the folks at Lucasfilm love the fans.”
Even so, there is no solid news on what this new project could be or if Glover can don the Calrissian role again. “We’re talking about it. That’s as much as I can say without [Lucasfilm president] Kathleen Kennedy hunting me down,” Glover jokes.
