Dolly Parton’s ‘Still Working 9 to 5’ Has a World Premiere

Documentary feature Still Working 9 to 5 starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dabney Coleman, will have its world premiere at SXSW on March 13, 2022. The film celebrates seminal comedy 9 to 5 which came out in 1980. 40 years later, this documentary explores why workplace inequality is still prevalent today.

The documentary will also introduce a new duet of the original theme song “9 to 5” by Dolly Parton and Kelly Clarkson.

The original film became beloved in American history as a comedy covering a serious matter. Multiple generations of people know the lyrics to its iconic theme song, leading it to become an anthem for working women everywhere who seek equality and fairness from their male counterparts in the workplace.

More than 40 years later, the feature documentary Still Working 9 to 5 will not only celebrate its iconic predecessor but will also document the impact that it had on the woman’s movement of that time and still continues today.

The original film’s comedic tone hopes to bleed over into this one, resonating again with the wide feminist audience, as it did in 1980. It further follows the success of the original film’s message that lead to various 9 to 5 spin-offs including a TV series and a Broadway Musical.

Still Working 9 to 5 will reunite the original stars, as well as Rita Moreno from the 9 to 5 TV series, Allison Janney from the Broadway musical, and other stars from various incarnations of the classic film. The documentary will also feature activists and individuals who are associated with the women’s movement both now and then.

Hopefully, the message retains its original poignancy and examines the way things have and have not changed for women in the workplace over the last 40 years.
