The Doc NYC is held each year and is considered one of the United States’ most premier documentary film festivals. This year’s event will host 200 films, which includes more than 110 feature-length documentaries, 29 world premieres, and 27 U.S. premieres. The event will also be where the world debut of the documentary on The Elephant 6 Recording Company.
In Ruston, Louisiana, in the mid-1980’s, four high schoolers began experimenting with gear and instruments that they found. As they developed a love and talent for music, they were also exploring what artistic expressiveness was and how it differed from being a stereotypical “successful” musician. The founding members are Bill Doss, Will Cullen Hart, Jeff Mangum, and Robert Schneider, who have all gone their own separate ways, but will always maintain their close bond. As the label grew, they birthed many music groups, such as Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, and The Apples in Stereo.
The documentary was filmed by C.B. Stockfleth. He grew up in Kentucky, but is currently based in New Orleans, Louisiana, and has done music videos for bands, such as the Apples In Stereo and the Olivia Tremor Control, who still have ties to Elephant 6.
The Doc NYC will take place at the Cinépolis Chelsea, and will be held in-person from Nov. 9-17 and online from Nov. 9-27.
