Comicbook.com has reported that according to a listing with Brazilian ticket distributor Ingresso, the Doctor Strange sequel film’s runtime will come to a whopping 148 minutes. This is over a half-hour longer than the first Doctor Strange film and is one the longest MCU films to date.
This runtime brings the film to tie with the recently released Spider-Man: No Way Home and comes just short of Avengers: Infinity War and Eternals at 2 hours and 29 minutes and 2 hours and 36 minutes, respectively. Avengers: Endgame remains the longest MCU film at 3 hours and 1 minute. These longer runtimes are to be expected from larger, culminating films like the Avengers films, the finale to the Spider-Man trilogy, and everything Strange 2 is teased about being.
Due to a troubled production resulting from COVID delays and restrictions, the film is finally set to release this May. In an interview with Deadline, Benedict Cumberbatch said: “To try and make a massive film like that under the constrictions of a pandemic and the delays that have ensued, partly because of The Power of the Dog, but also because of everything that was lined up and had to be pushed back from Marvel. It’s been tough for everyone. Also, incredibly enjoyable and no less enjoyable than the first one.” He reassured audiences that the reshoots were for good reasons (i.e., to include more characters, make things better), not the scramble and change things.
The official synopsis of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness reads: “To restore a world where everything is changing, Strange seeks help from his ally Wong, the Sorcerer Supreme, and the Avengers’ most powerful Scarlet Witch, Wanda. But a terrible threat looms over humanity and the entire universe that no longer can be done by their power alone. Even more surprising, the greatest threat in the universe looks exactly like Doctor Strange.”
Cumberbatch returns in the titular role of Stephen Strange/Doctor Strange alongside Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, who, after the events of the Disney+ series, WandaVision, is one of the theorized villains of the film. Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, and Chiwetel Ejiofor are also reprising their roles. This will be Xochitl Gomez’s first outing in the MCU fray as famed comic character, America Chavez. There are sure to be many cameos and surprise appearances from other Marvel characters and concepts as well, including a possible visit from Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier and the confirmed Illuminati, as revealed in the Super Bowl trailer.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness releases in theaters on May 6.
