Scott Derrickson, best known for his role as director for 2016’s Doctor Strange, has just signed on to direct the sequel to Labyrinth. Labyrinth is cult favorite film that was initially released in 1986 with Jim Henson as director, Monty Python‘s Terry Jones as screenwriter, and Lucasfilms as producer. It followed the story of a young teenager named Sarah Williams (Jennifer Connelly) whose brother was kidnapped by a goblin king (David Bowie). While the film was not necessarily a huge hit at the box office, it remained a favorite among fantasy movie and music lovers everywhere, particularly for the visuals and Bowie’s performance.
The follow-up sequel to Labrynith comes after years of fans of the film begging for another installment, though it will be forced to happen without Bowie, who passed away in 2016. Levine, best known for her work on Into the Dark, will write the latest installment for TriStar Pictures. Levine also previously wrote and directed multiple films for Hulu.
Derrickson found fame with his debut film, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and has since primarily focused on horror and thriller genre entries. Brian Henson, Jim Henson’s son and current chairman of the Jim Henson Company, will serve as executive producer while Lisa Henson will be producer.
