Oliver! is easily considered one of the best book-to film musical adaptations ever released, winning six Oscars including Best Picture back in 1968. It also won two Golden Globes, and the film is considered a classic for any musical fan. Disney will be making an attempt at remaking the classic, and it has now picked up its writer. Danny Strong, the Academy Award-winning writer for his work on The Butler, has signed on to the project, according to Deadline. Strong has kept himself fairly busy, including writing on the show Empire and writing/directing on the J.D. Salinger biopic Rebel in the Rye.
Oliver! followed the story of a young boy named Oliver who is an orphan that works at a workhouse. After he makes his escape to London, we follow his journey as he joins a child robbery syndicate led by Fagin, who acts as a father figure for the homeless children. The film is supposedly going to add and change certain parts to the previous film in an attempt to keep it fresh.
Currently, Ice Cube is set to produce and play as the popular character Fagin, and Tommy Kail, the director behind one of the most talked about musicals of the current decade Hamilton, is set to direct. Could we see another extremely successful version of Oliver? We will have to see when the film releases in the future.
