It seems Disney is making sure that every single one of their 90s animated films receives a live action adaptation. Despite garnering very mixed reception from fans and critics alike, it hasn’t stopped the Mouse from announcing a ton of new Live Action remakes due to how financially successful they’ve been. This time the 1997 Animated Classic Hercules will be getting a live action adaptation, with a few familiar faces from Marvel attached to the project.
Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo will be producing the new remake under their AGBO banner. In addition David Callahan, writer of the upcoming Marvel film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is set to pen the script for Hercules. The film is still early in development however, as it is unknown how much will stay true to the original animated film.
Fans are wondering if this film, will differentiate from its animated source material like the upcoming Mulan remake, or just be another carbon copy of the original film like The Lion King. Either way, it’s uncertain if a live action adaptation Disney Hercules could work given how stylized and unique the 90s film looked, let alone the absence of James Woods’ Hades. At the very least, fans can hope that Danny DeVito reprises his role as Phil.
