Disney has removed a planned Star Wars film from its 2026 lineup. The newest installment in the Ice Age franchise will take its place.
Simon Kinberg has signed an expansive deal with Disney to write and produce a new Star Wars feature trilogy. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy is set to produce the upcoming films.
Although details about the trilogy have not been released, sources say it will not be a direct continuation of the Skywalker saga. Instead, the films will introduce new characters and establish a storyline separate from the original nine-film franchise.
Kinberg co-created the animated series Star Wars: Rebels, which ran for four seasons from 2014 to 2018. He also served as a consultant on Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015).
Disney also announced that Ice Age 6 is in production, with Ray Romano, Queen Latifah and John Leguizamo reprising their previous roles. The news was revealed at D23 Expo Brazil last week.
The most recent film in the franchise, Ice Age: Collision Course, was released in July 2016 and surpassed $400 million at the global box office.
Ice Age 6 is currently slated for theatrical release on Dec. 18, 2026.
