There is currently a lot of buzz surrounding the new The Little Mermaid live action remake, but that is not the only live action adaptation that Disney is working on. A live action version of Mulan is set to release in spring of 2020. Disney has promised to release a trailer for the movie in the near future. The movie is being directed by Niki Caro, and the cast consists of Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Ron Yuan, Tzi Ma, Rosalind Chao, Cheng Pei-Pei, Nelson Lee, Chum Ehelepola, Donnie Yen, Jet Li, and Gong Li.
Unlike Disney’s other live action remakes Mulan will deviate significantly from the original. Several new characters are being introduced including a new villainess who will be played by Gong Li. This character is probably going to replace Shan Yu the Hun from the original version. There will also be a new mentor figure, and Donnie Yen has been cast to play him. Also the character of Mulan’s love interest has been altered for this remake. Not only that but there is still a lot of uncertainty surrounding the status of Mulan’s dragon friend Mushu. At first it looked like Disney was going to remove Mushu’s character from the remake entirely, but now it looks like Mushu will be in the new movie except he will now be a phoenix instead of a dragon.
There have also been a lot of questions surrounding the music for the new Mulan. Initial reports claimed that all the songs were going to be cut, but now it looks like they will still be in the movie as instrumentals only.
