Disney’s 1982 sci-fi adventure, Tron, remains one the studio’s oddest films to date. Featuring wild visuals and an unusual concept, Tron has mystified audiences ever since, which has led to it gaining quite a cult status. Hoping to start a potential franchise, the studio released Tron: Legacy in 2010. But that ended up as a huge flop for Disney, and while there were talks of still green-lighting a third film, their recent box office failures of The Lone Ranger and Tomorrowland put a halt to that possibility. However, the franchise may not be dead after all.
There have been many instances where a studio sees the merit in giving a mildly successful film a sequel. And considering that Tron: Legacy has grown in popularity since its release, it only seems fair give Tron 3 a try. It would be very unfortunate if Disney’s recent misfires would dissuade the studio enough stop the Tron sequel in its tracks. But according to one hopeful producer, it could still happen. In an interview with Screen Rant, Disney producer Brigham Taylor said that there has been “conversations” about a third film.
I’m always hope for that. I just had a wonderful visit to Shanghai, where they have an amazing attraction based on Tron Legacy. The designers just did such an amazing job creating the feeling of stepping onto The Grid, and that indelible visual world that Lisberger created and Kosinski explored… and I think there’s a real stickiness to that that I hope can grow into a film or whatever else. So I don’t know what I’d “hint” at other than that I hope for that, and that there’s obviously been conversations.
It’s probably fair to say that Tron: Legacy will continue to gain more and more fans over time. And if there ever is a big enough fanbase for the series, we may just get to see a sequel head into production sometime down-the-line. Disney has recently been rebooting many of its classic films, so it’s possible that Tron 3 could also be in those talks.
