Disney Plus to Release New ‘Frozen’ Short Featuring Olaf’s Origins This Holiday Season

Frozen is still one of the biggest franchises to ever come out of Disney with so many movies and shorts being beloved by children everywhere. Disney is no stranger to capitalizing on the animated Princess franchise as they have been known for constantly making shorts featuring the lovable snowman himself Olaf. Now, Disney has something new in store this holiday season for Olaf as it has been announced that a new Olaf short will premiere this October on Disney Plus.

The short is known as Once Upon A Snowman, and will discuss the origins of Olaf from when Elsa created him to when he meets Anna and Kristoff.  The short will be directed by Trent Correy, supervising animator on Olaf on Frozen 2 and storyboard artist Dan Abraham. Josh Gad will unsurprisingly reprise his role as the joyful snowman once again for this short. Corey and Abraham stated that, “To have the opportunity to work with him in the recording booth was such a privilege and career highlight.”

Disney releasing a short based off their own films that takes place during the events of the film is nothing new. Plenty of Disney shorts have come out showcasing the untold story of what happened to other characters while we witness the main conflict unfold. Shorts like Jack Jack Attack for The Incredibles and Dug’s Special Mission for Up are good examples of how Disney can show what audiences did not witness when first watching the original film. This short definitely seems to be in line with those other shorts and looks to be a fun little addition to the Frozen series even if some will still argue that the franchise has been overblown.

Once Upon A Snowman is set to premiere on Disney Plus October 23rd, 2020.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
