Disney has announced that it will release all its new movies for the fall exclusively in movie theaters. After the huge success of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, The Walt Disney Company feels that it is finally time to return to the big screen without the help of Disney+ subscribers.
Disney and Marvel had set big hopes and expectations on Shang-Chi as it would serve as a sort of test to see if movie-goers are confident enough to go back to movie theaters again.
After breaking the Labor Day weekend box office record it became evident that people have tremendously missed going to the cinema to watch big blockbusters. Hence, Disney has officially announced that all their films that are set to release in 2021 such as Eternals, the delayed The King’s Man and Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story will have exclusive theatrical releases.
There had been some speculation on whether or not Disney would return to the strategy they had employed during most of 2020 by releasing its movies simultaneously on Disney+ and in cinemas. It might have been an option for the entertainment giant if Shang-Chi had underperformed.
Another key component to consider is the ongoing Scarlett Johansson lawsuit against The Walt Disney Company for breach of contract. The Black Widow movie had been released in July both on the steaming service Disney+ and in movie theaters. Now, Ms. Johansson is suing Disney for cutting her off potential premium wages as her contract had an added bonus clause depending on how well the movie would do in cinema ticket sales. Disney’s possible plan of action is to avoid further fiascos with actors in Eternals and other upcoming blockbusters.
In any case, it has now become apparent and palpable that the people have been longing to go back to movie theaters and enjoy a nice date with friends, popcorn, soda, and some action on the big screen.
And Disney is more than happy to oblige to the people’s wishes.
