Disney has been eying Doctor Who and Guardians of the Galaxy star Karen Gillan to head the reboot of their hugely successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
This studio recently tapped Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Ted Elliot back in October to bring the franchise in a new direction after Dead Man Tells No Tales underperformed at the box office and received harsh reviews. President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, Sean Bailey, discussed a potential reboot in 2018, stating. “We want to bring in a new energy and vitality. I love the [Pirates] movies, but part of the reason Paul and Rhett are so interesting is that we want to give it a kick in the pants. And that’s what I’ve tasked them with.”
Theories have been swirling around who Gillan’s character would be in this reboot, with many Pirates fans using clues from the theme park ride the franchise was based on. Some believe that she will play Redd, a popular female character in the Disney attraction and who acts as a meet-and-greet character. Physically, Gillan matches the part of Redd, giving validity to theories.
Gillan’s most recent film work includes Jumanji: The Next Level, sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and the Marvel entry Avengers: Endgame.
