Disney Changes Content Warnings On Streaming In Response To New DEI Administration

In response to Donald Trump’s executive administration and an overall shift in DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) strategy, Disney has issued a change in content warning given before several projects of the past. These changes are reflected on the streaming platform Disney+ and can be seen in front of projects such as Dumbo and Peter Pan among others. The previous version of the content warning stated that the projects include “negative depictions and/or mistreatment of peoples or cultures.” This has since been changed to state, “This program is presented as originally created and may contain stereotypes or negative depictions.”

The former warning was included in 2020 and was adjusted from a warning first given in 2019.  It played in front of films of decades past to reflect that the negative depictions and stereotypes “were wrong then and are wrong now” but have now been reverted to the simpler and broader warning first seen in 2019.

2020’s full adjusted content warning read as follows:

“This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together. Disney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.”
