In an exclusive with The Hollywood Reporter, Walt Disney Pictures announced that it is currently in the process of moving forward with casting for the highly anticipated live-action adaptation of Tangled. The team has been holding screen tests and chemistry readings in London for the past week in search of the film’s two lead roles, Rapunzel and Flynn Rider. Multiple sources have reported that the studio has tested several young actors as it narrows down potential leads for the film.
Some of the artists who reportedly read for Rapunzel include Freya Skye, who is known for Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires; The White Lotus actress Sarah Catherine Hook; Titans actress Teagan Croft; and Invasion actress Olivia-Mai Barrett. Actors who have read for Flynn Rider include Zombies lead star Milo Manheim, Charlie Gillespie, who broke through in Julie and the Phantoms, and Scottish artist Gilli Jones. Several other candidates have also participated in screen tests, and many of the candidates are known for their musical backgrounds, which will be a central element of the project.
According to sources, The Summer I Turned Pretty star Lola Tung was under consideration but did not participate in testing, potentially due to scheduling conflicts tied to the series. A casting decision will likely be announced in the near future.
The original 2010 animated film is now widely regarded as a modern Disney classic. The cast featured Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi as the voices of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider. The live-action adaptation is set to be directed by Michael Gracey, whose credits include The Greatest Showman. Scarlett Johansson was previously attached to the project as Mother Gothel but is no longer involved. Disney is set to film in the U.K. beginning in June, after final casting decisions have been made.
