After the success of The Jungle Book, director Jon Favreau is heading back into the wild with Disney. Announced this morning, a live-action re-imagining of The Lion King will be the latest film released from the Disney vault to get a modernized live-action remake. The list of Disney films to get their own live-action versions continue to grow; Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and the upcoming Beauty and the Beast are just a few.
The re-imagining will follow 1994’s animated version, which was one of Disney’s most successful films earning $968.8 million globally – the film long held the record as the highest grossing animated feature in history. The popular songs like “Hakuna Matata”and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” may be included in this version as well. The latter of those tunes won the Academy Award for Best Original Song – the film was also re-imagined for a popular, Tony-winning musical which is still soaring on Broadway.
Favreau is well-versed in how things work at Disney, in fact, they are already working on a sequel to The Jungle Book. It may appear that The Jungle Book‘s photo-realistic visual aesthetic to come into focus for The Lion King as well. As of now, no confirmed released dates or production schedules have been announced for either project.
