22 years after they co-starred in the acclaimed court room drama, Tom Cruise is looking to reunite with his A Few Good Men co-star Jack Nicholson on the action-comedy two hander El Presidente. The Hollywood Reporter got news that Cruise and his Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman (who is hoping to take up the chair from Jay Roach, who had been attached to direct earlier on in 2012) visited Nicholson at the star’s home.
El Presidente is an action-comedy vehicle about a Secret Service agent who is assigned to protect a boozing, womanizing ex-American President when their lives are threatened. The project had been in development since 2010 and was penned by Parks and Recreation (NBC) and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Fox) writer Daniel J Goor and Jesse Armstrong (In the Loop, The Thick of It), with rewrites by Paul Attanasio (The Sum of all Fears, Quiz Show). Between those comedy alums and Liman, who himself isn’t a stranger to this type of light-hearted action with films like Go and Mr. and Mrs Smith, this seems like a no-brainer for Nicholson, who hasn’t appeared in a film since the under-performing How Do You Know (2010).
While no official announcements have been made since Cruise and Liman met with Nicholson, THR has reported that Nicholson has at least agreed to read the script. According to The Playlist, Cruise told Nicholson that he “won’t do the movie without him.” Meanwhile, Cruise and Liman’s last collaboration, Edge of Tomorrow, will be hitting theaters sometime next year.
