Diego Luna is Joining ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’

Diego Luna (Elysium) is joining Rogue One, the next spin-off for the Star Wars franchise, according to Variety. The actor will join Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Ben Mendelsohn (Slow West), and Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler) in the movie that follows the rebel mission to steal the plans for the first Death Star. This leads to Darth Vader chasing down Princess Leia at the beginning of Episode IV: A New Hope (1977). Luna will reportedly play a rebel soldier.

While he was in 2013’s Elysium, Luna has stayed out of the mainstream for the most part. He drew a lot of acclaim for his performance in Milk and many thought he was snubbed from an Oscar nomination. Last year, lent his voice to the character Manolo in The Book of Life.

Luna is just the latest to join a project that is shaping up to have quite the impressive cast, as they prepare to start production in time to make a December 16, 2016 release date. The movie is expected to have a similar feel to The Dirty Dozen or Saving Private Ryan, in terms of it revolving around a company of soldiers. The movie will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla).

Luna has two other projects in pre-production, including the dystopian love story The Bad Batch with Keanu Reeves (John Wick) and Jim Carrey (Dumb and Dumber To), as well as the sci-fi drama Io.

Tyler Lyon: When Tyler isn't thinking about the lack of a Canadian presence in D2: The Mighty Ducks, whether Princess Leia can now be considered a Disney Princess or discovering 8-bit classics on his 3DS, he's cheering on the Cubs, Bulls, Bears, Blackhawks, and Hawkeyes.
