Diablo Cody shared in the Comic-Con panel that a 9 to 5 remake is in the works. Cody completed the script before the con panel sharing the news with audiences that the remake will continue into the next stage of development. While Cody also confirmed that the film hasn’t made any casting decisions yet, she felt that the new direction the script will head in opens the door for a new type of comedy. Cody confirmed Jennifer Anniston to be producing the remake.
Cody shared that while the original 1980 version focused on the conflict between genders in the workplace, seeing working women in paperwork war with their evil male corporate overlords, the remake shifts to focus on generational differences, emphasizing old versus young employees or the ‘Bommer vs. Zoomer’ struggle.
While the original iconic trio of stars of the 1980 9 to 5 passed on joining the project, Dolly Parton and Jane Fonda did not share their reasons for doing so, Lily Tomlin did stating that she didn’t see how the new conflict worked for the film and that the workplace has vastly changed from what it was in 1980 in an interview with People magazine.
