Legendary actors Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts are once again set to act alongside one another in new project based on Rumaan Alam’s October 2020 novel Leave the World Behind. Washington and Roberts famously starred in 1993’s The Pelican Brief, written by John Grisham.
Leave the World Behind tells the story of two families who don’t know each other being forced to stay in the same house after a series of strange events derail their vacation in Long Island. It explores themes such as class, race, safety, and parenthood. Despite being unreleased, the novel has garnered so much attention that it is already being made into a film.
It is set to be directed by Sam Esmail, creator of the beloved show Mr. Robot, starring Rami Malek, in his first feature-length directorial project since 2014’s Comet, which started Emmy Rossum (Shameless) and Justin Long (Dodgeball).
This makes the second collaboration between Esmail and Roberts, as well, as Roberts currently stars in Esmail’s Amazon TV show, Homecoming, while Washington’s last film to be released was 2018’s The Equalizer 2.
The film had its rights bought by Netflix, meaning it will most likely be released exclusively on the platform. A release date or production schedule has not yet been released.
