Despicable Me 4 opened to $27 million this past Wednesday.
The Illumination Entertainment picture tells the story of Steve Carell’s Gru, a former supervillain turned family man and secret agent, facing off against Will Ferrell’s Maxime Le Mal. And it wouldn’t be a Despicable Me film without featuring the beloved neon yellow minions who are devoted to Gru and his missions.
The box office success comes as a big relief as this summer has demonstrated two extremes of box office wins and losses. It also reaffirms the power of the holiday theatrical release. The previous films in the franchise also all came out during the 4th of July holiday.
According to Variety, the first installment Despicable Me, debuted with $56 million, followed by Despicable Me 2 debuting with $83.5 million, and Despicable Me 3 debuting with $99 million, all over the course of this same holiday weekend every release time. The 4th of July holiday release proves again to be another win for Illumination Entertainment.
