Variety reports on remarks from Denis Villeneuve regarding the Oscars. Despite Villeneuve himself not receiving a nomination for Best Director for the film Dune, he says he is “deeply pleased” with the film’s ten nominations in other categories.
Dune is nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Score, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound. Many regard the omission of Best Director as an “Oscar Snub.” Villeneuve was nominated for Best Director for other awards such as the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards, and Directors Guild of America Awards.
Despite this “Oscar Snub”, Villeneuve has reflected positively on the nominations that the film did receive. One of the stars of the film, Josh Brolin, did mention his disappointment in Villeneuve not receiving the Best Director nomination. Brolin referred to the decision to not nominate Villeneuve as “dumb” and mentioned that Villeneuve “did the impossible” in getting the film made.
Dune is an adaptation of the science-fiction novel of the same name written by Frank Herbert. The film stars Timothée Chalamet, known for his role in Lady Bird, as Paul Atreides, and Zendaya, known for the Spider-Man MCU films, as Chani. Dune is one of ten films nominated for Best Picture at the 2022 Oscars.
