Despite recent wildfires raging across Los Angeles, the movie theater industry’s biggest national market, movie earnings have not been largely impacted. Most chains remained open, with a few smaller theaters closing in the Altadena-Pasadena area due to the Eaton fire.
Lionsgate’s Gerard Butler-led heist thriller Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is the leader this weekend at the domestic box office. The film, a new entry, performed over its projection, raking in $15.5M. The movie serves as a sequel to 2018’s Den of Thieves, which debuted similarly at $15.2M, Variety reports. Animated features Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 have kept within the Top 3 since their debut, earning $13M and $11M (second and third place), respectively.
Walt Disney Studios takes the fifth place spot as well, with Moana 2 at $6.5M this weekend. The film is currently surfing its way past the impressive $1 billion mark globally.
Coming in at fourth place is the Robert Eggers-directed gothic horror film Nosferatu, starring Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, and Bill Skarsgård as the titular vampire. The Focus Features film earned $6.8M.
Hot off its Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award at the Golden Globe’s last weekend, Wicked keeps within the Top 10 at number six, grossing $5M. Another Awards Season contender, Searchlight Pictures’ A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan scores just under Wicked.
A24’s erotic thriller Babygirl lands at eight with $3M, and international entry Game Changer takes ninth at $2.1M. Rounding out this weekend’s Top 10 is The Last Showgirl, distributed by Roadside Attractions. The film, which just received a wider release after last month’s awards-qualifying run, grossed $1.4M. The Last Showgirl was directed by Gia Coppola and stars Pamela Anderson in what is being called “the role of a lifetime” by IndieWire. Anderson was also nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance. A24’s grand tale The Brutalist, falls just under the Top 10, earning $1.3M
On the shorter-hand, the ambitious Better Man biographical film, which stars English popstar Robbie Williams as a CGI chimp, has massively underperformed at the box office. The film has only garnered about $1M against a budget of just over $100M. The film was distributed domestically by Paramount Pictures and comes in at number 14.
