In a record-breaking and incredible surprise, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, the first of a three-part planned animated cinematic adaptation of the final arc of Koyoharu Gotouge’s world-renowned manga turned anime, shattered expectations. The film overperformed and became the box office king of this weekend. Original estimates had placed the anime film closer into the ballpark of its predecessors, with $35 to $40 million as an opening, with some hopefuls placing it with $50 million. Instead, Demon Slayer took the crown with a massive $70 million, including a $33 million haul for a complete international release. This is a separate gross from its initial Japanese and limited market release from last month, where it also performed incredibly well. This makes it the largest opening for an anime series film in the North American domestic market.
Following behind in second is The Conjuring: Last Rites, which saw a steep 69% drop from the previous week in its third outing, with only $26.1 million. This still helps Last Rites keep its title as the franchise’s best-performing film, with a grand total of $131 million domestically and around $333 million internationally.
Landing in third following estimates is the series finale for beloved British drama Downton Abbey. Downton Abbey Grand Finale took home $18.1 million and is riding high with a solid A CinemaScore.
Taking forth in another follow-through on estimates is the Stephen King adaptation of The Long Walk, which brought in $11.5 million for its opening week. This total is not unusual for films of its genre. Following behind The Long Walk, rounding out the top five is Disney’s re-release of the original Toy Story for its 30th anniversary, with $3.5 million.
Kicking off the lower five, landing in sixth is Weapons in its sixth week. The horror film brought home $272 million, contributing to a grand total of $147.45 million domestically. Following closely behind is Disney’s theatrical release of the filmed performance of the famed live theater musical Hamilton from Lin-Manuel Miranda, which brought in $2.2 million in its second week.
Eighth place this week went to Disney again, with Freakier Friday bringing in $2.1 million, following closely behind Hamilton.
In ninth came newcomer Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. The long-awaited sequel to the famous mockumentary Spinal Tap. This sequel managed to snag $1.67 million for its premiere.
Rounding out the very bottom of the top ten is another re-release, also from Disney, is The Sound of Music with $1.48 million for its 60th anniversary.
