DC’s ‘Super Pets’ Movie in the Works at Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. has announced that a Super Pets film is in the works, to be directed by Lego Batman writer Jared Stern. The animated film will focus on the pets of DC universe superheroes. The idea of pet superheroes first took shape in 1962 in Adventure Comics #293. Soon after, Cartoon Network translated it into a series of DC Super-Pets! shorts. Presently, Warner Bros. is trying to build upon this idea on the big screen, with a concentration on the novelty of animal superheroes.

There is very little information regarding the film, though Collider reports that Jared Stern will both direct and write the movie. The main characters will come from the comics and the cartoons, and apparently Stern will also create new Super Pets for the film. Stern is a relatively new director, with his only directing credit being Happy Anniversary on Netflix, though he is an experienced screenwriter, having written the aforementioned Lego Batman Movie, and also The Lego Ninjago Movie.

In DC lore, Super Pets characters such as Krypto the Super-Dog, Bebbo the Super-Monkey, Comet the Super-Horse and Streaky the Super-Cat have filled the superhero-pet void. When compared to Marvel, who only have Cosmo the Spacedog in Guardians of the Galaxy, DC owns the focus on animals in superhero movies. The Super Pets film is the first in what will hopefully be a long, successful string of animal superhero movies.
