DC Studios has released the profits generated by Superman after its release this summer. The film reportedly made DC Studios more than $100 million in profit. They also stated that the film is “approaching $150 million globally when all is said and done this year.” In a year where many big name blockbusters ended up underperforming, Superman managed to stay afloat and rake in $616 million at the global box office.
The film ended up performing much better domestically than overseas, with $354 million of that profit being attributed to the domestic box office. Compared to other comic book movies this year, Superman topped all of Marvel’s outings. Marvel’ highest-grossing film this year was The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which earned $521 million globally. Further down the list are Captain America: Brave New World at $415 million and Thunderbolts* at $382 million.
Despite doing well at the box office, a large portion of Superman‘s success came from streaming. The film was put on HBO Max after a mere 70-day theatrical run. It racked up more than 13 million global views in its first 10 days, something that has not been done on HBO Max since Barbie hit the streamer back in 2023. It came as a confusing decision to some to put the film on the service while it was still performing well in theaters. James Gunn stated that the decision was made so more people could see the film before the premiere of Peacemaker season 2.
Superman is part of the DCU’s first chapter, titled “Gods and Monsters.” Next up for DC is Supergirl (previously titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”) on June 26, 2026 and Clayface on September 11, 2026. Additionally, the Lanterns TV series is expected to premiere in early 2026, but it has no solid release date yet. However, the future of James Gunn’s DCU is unclear as of now, as Warner Bros. is currently up for sale, with companies such as Paramount and Netflix placing bids. Assuming the DCU is allowed to continue, the next appearance of David Corenswet as Superman is expected to be in Man of Tomorrow. The film will star David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult as Superman and Lex Luther who will need to team up to combat a larger threat. The film will be written and directed by James Gunn, and is expected to begin production in 2026. It is set to release on July 9, 2027.
